Return to Ukraine. The Krychevsky family

The V.V. Vereshchagin Mykolaiv Art Museum is a museum with an interesting century-old  history. Over the years, it collects, stores and reveals to its visitors the best examples of fine art that have been created in different countries around the world. The museum’s collection contains rare exhibits that have no analogues in any museum or private collection.

In recent decades, the museum’s collection has been replenished with gifts from artists and private citizens. The total number of museum exhibits is approaching 20,000 items.

For fruitful work, the museum has been awarded different times. Thus, in 2002 it received the Gold Medal of the Russian Academy of Arts for great contribution to the preservation and popularization of the cultural heritage of the outstanding painter V.V. Vereshchagin. In the same year, the museum became a laureate of the International Academic Rating of Popularity and Quality “Golden Fortune”.

In 2004, the museum was awarded the Mykola Arkas Regional Prize for  great work on the return to Ukraine from the United States of 64 works. Among them there are watercolors and oil paintings from the famous artistic family of Krychevsky. The founders of this family were brothers Vasyl Hryhorovych and Fedir Hryhorovych Krychevsky, both famous Ukrainian artists, academics. With the support of M.S. Hrushevsky, in 1917 they founded the Ukrainian Academy of Arts.

Vasyl Krychevsky is the author of the coat of arms of Ukraine and the first Ukrainian money of 1918. He is a well-known painter, graphic artist and architect. In addition, he worked a lot as a theater artist in Kyiv and Kharkiv, and was a co-author of O. Dovzhenko in cinema. Fedir Krychevsky is an outstanding Ukrainian artist, the author of numerous paintings depicting the history of Ukraine.

 Both of Vasyl Krychevsky’s sons, Mykola and Vasyl, are outstanding artists. Vasyl Hryhorovych’s granddaughter Kateryna Krychevska-Rosandich lives in the USA today. She is a famous artist in Europe and the United States and still remains a patriot of Ukraine. She played an important role in returning to Ukraine the share of the Krychevsky family’s heritage.
